Week Three Recap: Culture, Cuisine, and Connection
Week Three of Kalimah’s 2025 STEAM & Culture Arabic Immersion Camp was full of movement, creativity, and real-world learning. Campers deepened their understanding of Ibn Al-Haytham’s legacy while continuing to explore art, food, music, and cultural storytelling through immersive activities.
Here’s how the week unfolded:
On Monday, guest educator Maricelle returned to lead campers in a new round of sewing crafts. They practiced techniques, learned Arabic terms for fabrics and stitching, and created pieces that reflect both creativity and cultural patterns.

On Tuesday, campers put on their aprons and cooked Algerian shakshouka. Using fresh ingredients and Arabic instructions, they practiced language and teamwork while preparing a dish rich with flavor and history.

On Wednesday, professional Dabke instructor Michael joined us to teach Dabke—a high-energy Levantine dance that had everyone on their feet. Campers also learned about Arabic musical instruments like the oud and tabla, connecting rhythm and culture through sound and movement.

On Thursday, we took a field trip to Washington, DC, where campers visited the Museum of the Palestinian People, explored the Middle East Bookstore, and enjoyed lunch at Falafel Sam. It was a full day of learning and discovery, allowing campers to connect the themes of the camp to real communities, stories, and traditions.

Preparing for the Souq
Throughout the week, campers also began preparing for the Souq, which is happening this Saturday. The Souq is a marketplace simulation experience where campers create and sell handmade products—an opportunity that integrates STEAM, culture, and language in a real-world setting.
Campers brainstormed ideas, started crafting their items, and discussed strategies for pricing, marketing, and displaying their goods. They’re excited to interact with the broader community, practice Arabic in a public setting, and raise funds for a nonprofit organization benefiting children.
This week captured exactly what Kalimah stands for—bridging language, culture, and creativity while building meaningful skills and confidence. We’re incredibly proud of the work our campers have done and can’t wait to see their ideas come to life at the Souq this weekend.
